LSSI Repurposes Medication-Assisted Detox Beds; Expands Residential Rehabilitation Services in Chicago

June 5, 2023

Effective July 1, 2023, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) will repurpose its 16 medication-assisted detox beds at its Addiction Treatment Center-Kenmore in Chicago to residential rehabilitation beds. The change will expand residential rehabilitation for drug and alcohol treatment from 37 beds to 46 beds.

“We provide a broad continuum of substance use treatment services, and residential treatment programs continue to be critically in demand,” said Frank Harris, Executive Director, Behavioral Health Services at LSSI. “This is the most effective use of our resources. We will continue to partner with a strong network of community providers who offer drug and alcohol treatment programs, including those offering medication-assisted detox.”

The onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic in early 2020 significantly decreased the med-detox program’s daily census, which continued post-pandemic. Many of the beds not used by med-detox clients are regularly used for people needing residential rehabilitation. Combined with the medical resources the program requires, along with an ongoing, critical need for residential rehabilitation for drug/alcohol use, LSSI made the decision to repurpose all the med-detox beds for use as residential rehabilitation.

Also known as inpatient treatment, residential rehabilitation offers a structured living environment that provides education, counseling, self-work, and healing in one residential location. In addition to its residential rehabilitation program, LSSI’s Addiction Treatment Center-Kenmore also offers outpatient drug/alcohol treatment, DUI counseling and education, the Healthy Start Recovery Home, and sober living. LSSI will offer Medication Assisted Detox treatment until June 26.
