Leadership Transition at LSSI

June 2, 2026

A Message from Esther M. Macchione, Chair of LSSI’s Board of Directors

In partnership with the LSSI Board of Directors, and after careful planning, Mark Stutrud has shared his intention to retire as President & CEO, effective February 28, 2027.

This transition comes at a moment of real organizational strength, and we are confident in the road ahead. Mark will continue to lead day-to-day operations through his retirement date, and the Board will form a search committee in the coming weeks to identify LSSI’s next President & CEO—a process that will be deliberate and grounded in our mission and strategic priorities.

Over the course of his nearly 12-year leadership, Mark has helped guide LSSI through a period of meaningful growth and transformation, despite significant external challenges.

Mark’s leadership guided LSSI through challenging times and helped us emerge stronger than ever. In fact, his tenure here has been marked by growth and innovation: we piloted and established our Therapeutic Foster Care Program 10 years ago; we established two Healthy Start Recovery Homes in Chicago and Elgin; we were among one of the first organizations in Chicago to receive federal funding to launch a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC); we expanded our Intact Family Services Program to serve additional locations; we began our Families Together Pilot; and we opened our tenth group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—to name a few!

Most notably, Mark has led the organization’s continued evolution toward GenCare—LSSI’s commitment to engaging, surrounding, and connecting people to the supports they need, while promoting dignity, enhancing health and well-being, and helping them reach their full potential. Much of this was made possible by your generous support and that of our faithful churches.

Throughout this transition, our focus remains firmly on our mission. We want you to know with confidence what will remain constant:

  • LSSI’s mission of “Responding to the Gospel” and our values
  • Our commitment to the people we serve and the staff who serve them
  • Our relationship with you and our gratitude for your partnership

This transition also comes at a meaningful moment in our shared story. On October 31, 2026, LSSI will celebrate 159 years of service to the people of Illinois—a legacy that began in 1867, when Lutheran communities came together to care for those most in need. Over these many years, LSSI has witnessed profound change—always returning to the same foundation: compassion, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves support. That enduring mission has been made possible, in every generation, by the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners like you.

In the months ahead, we will keep you informed about the search process. We will share opportunities to celebrate Mark’s leadership and honor this legacy.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of LSSI’s mission. We are so very grateful for your support over the years that has enabled LSSI’s continued legacy to the people we serve across Illinois.

With gratitude,

Esther M. Macchione

Chair, LSSI Board of Directors
