Parsonage to Purpose: New Group Home Offers Belonging

Access to safe, comfortable housing is vital to optimal health, stability, and community belonging. Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) will soon open the doors of Park Ridge Place, a new group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Located in the former parsonage of Messiah Lutheran Church, Park Ridge, this marks LSSI’s tenth such home.

The vision for Park Ridge Place began with former Messiah Pastor Lynne Morrow several years ago. When she passed away, her vision was reignited by Pastor Aneel Trivedi, who joined Messiah three years ago. “Throughout there’s been a still, small voice in the congregation that said we can aim high and do something really special with this space,” Trivedi said. Congregation members have devoted many volunteer
hours and financial resources.

The home will welcome four residents, selected through a process that includes state preadmission screening to ensure eligibility and readiness. Candidates must have a developmental disability diagnosis, Medicaid coverage, be ambulatory, meet psychological and behavioral criteria, and actively want to live there.

LSSI carefully chooses home locations based on access to employment opportunities, day job training, healthcare providers, and recreational and social activities. These are all factors that contribute to residents living successfully and happily in the community.

“We are so thankful for Messiah’s welcoming community that has embraced LSSI, and who we know will embrace our new residents,” said Mary Ann Bibat, LSSI’s Executive Director of Senior and Disability Services, noting the congregation’s support and volunteer efforts. Other area congregations and individuals have also supported the effort to bring the vision of establishing the home to fruition.

“We learned that working with a partner is important,” said Trivedi. “LSSI is part of our Lutheran ministry, and this partnership brings our shared values to life.”

More than 100 people attended the home’s recent dedication, a testament to the community’s support. Residents are expected to move in later this summer.
