Make a Difference in the Life of a Child: May is Foster Parent Appreciation Month

May 7, 2024

As May unfolds, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) joins the chorus of voices celebrating Foster Parent Appreciation Month and saying a resounding “Thank You” to foster parents. This year, the theme resonates deeply: “Engaging Youth, Building Supports.” At LSSI, we recognize the pivotal role these committed adults play in the lives of vulnerable children, especially at a time when there is an urgent need for foster parents.

With nearly 20,000 children in foster care across Illinois, the demand for compassionate foster parents has never been greater. As the largest private provider of foster care services in Illinois, LSSI strives to ensure every child finds their forever home, whether through reunification with birth families or through adoption.

While the need spans all age groups, there’s a particular urgency for foster parents willing to open their hearts to teenagers and sibling groups.

At LSSI, inclusivity is not just a principle; it’s a commitment. We welcome and affirm members of the LGBTQIA+ community, both among the youth in our care and within our network of foster parents. Every child deserves a nurturing environment where they can thrive, regardless of their background or identity.

With foster care offices serving 12 communities in Illinois—Aurora, Canton, Champaign, Chicago, Danville, Galesburg, Marion, Moline, Nachusa, Rockford, Vienna, and West Peoria—LSSI serves families in 42 counties, determined to make a meaningful difference in every child’s life. For those inspired to embark on the rewarding journey of foster parenting, LSSI offers guidance and support every step of the way.

Whether you’re considering opening your home to a child in need or simply want to learn more about how you can help, we invite you to visit LSSI.org/fostercare or email fosterachild@lssi.org. Together, let’s continue to build a community where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
