Members of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square in Chicago have forged harmonious relationships with residents at the nearby Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) Palmer Square Group Home. A new video tells the story of the Birthday Buddies program, in which volunteer congregants visit Palmer Square residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities to celebrate each resident’s special day, sing along with staff, and enjoy desserts provided by church members.
St. Luke’s Pastor Erin Coleman Branchaud said the celebrations are mutually beneficial: “LSSI provides living support, vocational support, and daily dignity to residents,” she said. “The piece that we can provide is a little bit of extra joy and celebration and fun and community.”
In the video, Group Home Program Director Folake Durodola reflects on LSSI’s GenCare approach to “caring for the whole person in a community, home‑like setting,” helping adults age 18 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities thrive and experience independence within a nurturing and supportive environment.
A recent fundraising focus, including special collections at Lutheran congregations, helps fund much‑needed capital improvements for LSSI group homes, ensuring they remain safe and comfortable for years to come. LSSI operates 10 group homes statewide to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
