May is Older Americans Month
For Immediate Release
May 27, 2014. Sterling, IL-In honor of Older Americans Month this May, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) Senior Services Program in Sterling, IL would like to remind the community that this month, we commemorate the extraordinary contributions and sacrifices of our seniors, and we offer our renewed support and appreciation. “Older Americans have fortified our country and shaped our world,” said President Barack Obama when speaking on Older Americans Month. Older Americans Month provides an opportunity for the nation to recognize and pay tribute to our older Americans near to our hearts.
This year's Older Americans Month theme, "Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow," raises awareness about injury prevention. Many older Americans are at risk for injuries and violence; unintentional injuries and acts of violence to the elderly result in an estimated 30,000 deaths each year and untold injuries resulting in the need for medical treatment. Unfortunately, we know that older adults are also at risk for being victims of elder abuse.
LSSI has programs to help keep older adults safely in their homes. LSSI’s Case Management services provide an individualized comprehensive review of available services within the community, to assist individuals with their current needs. Persons age 60+ are eligible for a home visit to discuss care options.
LSSI’s Adult Protective Services Program provides investigation and intervention services for adults who are victims of abuse or neglect. To report suspected adult abuse, you may call LSSI at 815.626.7333 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, or call the Illinois Department on Aging’s Elder Abuse Hotline at 1.866.800.1409 anytime, 24/7. All reports are confidential.
