Pedal for a Purpose

Presented by Central/Southern Illinois Synod
Benefitting Lutheran Social Services of Illinois

Congregations throughout the Central/Southern Illinois Synod will participate in the 5th Annual Pedal for a Purpose, a bike-riding fundraiser held throughout the spring that this year will benefit LSSI. The goal of the 2017 Pedal for a Purpose is $50,000 for LSSI's Prisoner and Family Ministry and Children's Community Services. The event also marks several other great commemorations—the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and the 150th Anniversary of LSSI's founding!

Pedal for a Purpose uses the concept of pledging a certain amount of money to individuals participating in a bicycle-themed event. This could be a pledge per mile, or a donation to an individual or church participating in Pedal for a Purpose. There are many creative ways that congregations can get involved! For example, hold a spinning event at a local YMCA or fitness center, a stationary-Bike-A-Thon, or pre-school "trike-a-thon" to name a few.

Over the last 4 years of Pedal for a Purpose, 77 cyclists have biked more than 1,217 miles to visit 44 congregations and raise over $95,000 to support Lutheran ministries. These have included LSSI and several Central/Southern Synod-specific causes, including Lutheran Campus, the Madagascar companion synods, and seminary debt reduction.
