Home for the Holidays

What a difference a year can make in the life of your parent or loved one. Last holiday season, the house was decorated, holiday lights were hung, and the cookies were homemade.

This year, something has changed. Mom has lost weight and her memory isn’t as sharp. Dad is weaker and less active. Though they’ve tried to make the season festive, they’re clearly not up to the task.

With winter upon us, the situation may become more difficult. Getting to medical appointments during inclement weather, shoveling snow, and ailing furnaces add to the trials of aging.

Annual visits to the family home are often when adult children become aware of their parents’ health issues and daily living challenges. You may notice that your parent is not as social and becoming isolated from friends. Holiday visits may uncover issues that have been hidden during phone conversations and video chats like stale food, careless housekeeping and unopened mail.

When your parents are obviously struggling – but resist change – what can you do?

Since families tend to gather in one place, it’s an opportune time to visit senior communities.

Senior housing has evolved in the past 20 years. Older adults envision loss of freedom, boredom and frustration. Nothing could be further than the truth, especially during the winter months. Visiting neighboring senior communities will likely prove an enlightening experience.

Today’s senior communities are designed to support active, independent adults.

For example, at Joshua Arms, a wide array of activities, outings and entertainment is offered to keep our residents engaged and healthy. Social services caseworkers assist in determining what services may be available to improve their quality of life.

For seniors needing a bit more help to remain independent, Supportive Living includes a modern, roomy apartment, home-cooked meals, snacks, help with medication, housekeeping and laundry services as well as activities, outings and entertainment.

The best part of life at Joshua Arms Senior Residences and The Oaks Supportive Living is its affordability.

Senior apartments start at $572. Supportive Living is $3,114 with subsidies available for those who qualify.
