This is Our Calling

On Oct. 31, LSSI celebrated the 153rd anniversary of its founding. In 1867, when a cholera epidemic spread through northwestern Illinois, hundreds of children were left without parents. Lutherans rallied together to provide for these children, and thus LSSI was first established.

That same spirit of compassion lives on today as LSSI continues to provide services to children, adults, and seniors during a global pandemic. Our work is both a career and a calling.

LSSI foster parents Mandi and Roberto Garcia also feel this calling. "When I saw the number of children who need stability and love, I thought, 'This is what we're called to do,'" said Mandi. Profiled in our cover story, the Garcias, of Rockford, have fostered numerous children and have adopted two through foster care. Their story is fitting and inspiring as November is National Adoption Month.

In October, LSSI honored the Rev. Mark and Kathy Helge with our True Friend Award. Normally, we give the award at a gala fundraiser. But the pandemic calls us to be innovative, and we held a "virtual" gala that raised over $190,000 for LSSI's Children's Community Services.

In the work that LSSI does, and with the individuals and congregations who support our mission, I am reminded of this verse from the second epistle of Peter (2 Peter 1:10), "Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble."

For those who are called to serve LSSI, I am grateful for all that you do.

In faith,

Mark A. Stutrud
President and Chief Executive Officer
