In-Kind Donations
One way that people can share in Lutheran Social Services of Illinois' (LSSI) ministry to people in need is through in-kind donations. Throughout the year, many opportunities for giving exist for individuals, families, groups and churches. Here are some examples of how you can help:
- Donate backpacks and school supplies - such as pens, pencils, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, construction paper, rulers, glue sticks, safety scissors, pencil cases or bags - for LSSI's annual back-to-school drive in August for foster children in the Chicago area.
- Donate toiletries for Connections, LSSI's Prisoner and Family Ministry program in the Chicago area that assists previously incarcerated women who are re-entering the community.
- Donate toiletries, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brush, shampoo, soap, washcloths and children's new pajamas and underwear, for use in "ditty bags" given to foster children. Travel-sized toiletries are welcomed.
- Donate Christmas gifts for LSSI clients, including foster children, Head Start students, seniors in low-income housing and nursing homes, and adults participating in Behavioral Health programs.
- Donate gift cards from Target in $5, $10 and $20 denominations for emergency funds distributed by the programs.
- Donate household items for LSSI's Steps to Life program for older foster children who are transitioning to independent living in Chicago and the Transitional Living Program, which began in 2007 in Rockford, which also serves youth transitioning from institutional or facility living to independent living. Items needed include linens (twin bedding), towels and washcloths, dishes, plastic containers (such as Tupperware®), etc.
