Intergenerational Resource Center
Established in 1998 “for the youth of yesterday and the senior of tomorrow,” the Intergenerational Resource Center in Rockford provides education and health care, as well as psychological, emotional and spiritual resources for youth and older adults. The Intergenerational program is conducted by Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) in collaboration with Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford and other groups, and serves residents of a severely economically disadvantaged neighborhood in southeast Rockford.
Using LSSI’s AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers, the program connects older adults and youths, and also offers a program for children in kindergarten and first grade. These programs focus on issues of truancy, tardiness, and parental education and involvement.
The Intergenerational Resource Center is located at the Patriot’s Gateway Center, a nonprofit agency that serves approximately 1,200 people a year, most of them children. More than 20 agencies – including LSSI – work with the Center, providing classes and services to residents.
