Crisis Services for Children: Screening,
Assessment & Support Services (SASS)
At Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI), our SASS program in Chicago provides crisis intervention and follow-up services to children and adolescents experiencing a psychiatric crisis, who have no insurance or are funded by Medicaid. Eligibility and services are accessed through CARES, a statewide hotline number at 1-800-345-9049. Any concerned person may call CARES to provide a description of the crisis. If CARES determines the child is at risk, a SASS worker will be called out to assess the child wherever he/she is located. The SASS worker evaluates the child’s need for psychiatric hospitalization, then either assists the family in that process or creates a safety plan for the home. SASS provides 90 days of intensive follow-up services after the crisis to help stabilize the child and family.
SASS is licensed through a partnership of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services; the Department of Mental Health; and the Department of Children and Family Services (there are many SASS providers across Illinois). LSSI provides SASS services to children and adolescents residing on the Northwest Side of Chicago.
