A New Playground for North Austin Head Start
In September 2008, LSSI’s North Austin Head Start playground received a major facelift. Kohl’s Cares for Kids funded the renovation, in collaboration with the Injury Prevention and Research Center at Children’s Memorial Hospital, which managed the project. Amy Hill, project manager, says, “At the Injury Prevention and Research Center, we are interested in building safe spaces for children to play, learn and grow.” North Austin was one of two playground recipients selected by the Center in 2008 from 46 applicants, based on need. The project cost approximately $75,000.
After the old playground equipment was removed, volunteers worked to install new landscaping and equipment, including Soft Surface rubber tiles.
During the installation, the Head Start kids “were all at the windows, wanting to know when they could play on the new playground,” says Lannie Brown-Simon, Children’s Community Services (CCS) facility manager for LSSI.
When the kids walked out and looked at the new playground, “They were ecstatic,” says Doris Holden, site director. “They were not able to play on it for a while because of the construction. Now, they are thoroughly enjoying it.”
But there’s more to the new playground than just fun. “It’s important because it enables us to give the kids the physical activity they need,” Doris says. “Our classrooms are small, and so there’s no place for climbing, jumping, hopping or skipping – or what we call large motor activities. The playground is a great place for that. Also, having a playground is required by the Head Start program.”
LSSI’s North Austin Head Start program provides early childhood education for approximately 54 pre-school children between three and five years old.
